The Cactus Homes, an innovative project by JK3D designed to reimagine affordable housing, has been awarded an Honorable Mention in the Initiative 99 Competition, a global architectural competition by ICON aimed at addressing the critical need for affordable housing solutions.
The Cactus Homes draw inspiration from nature while integrating cutting-edge 3D printing technology, redefining modern living in an affordable context.
The Cactus Homes takes inspiration from the natural intelligence of succulents, creating a series of homes that blend organic beauty with functionality. The cactus-shaped units, each designed to reflect individuality while fostering a strong connection to nature. These homes leverage advanced 3D printing technology, pushing the boundaries of architectural innovation in affordable housing.
After the success of the Phase I design, which introduced a 6-unit layout, the team reimagined the project in Phase II to fit a 2-unit duplex configuration. This new layout enhances the efficiency, functionality, and customizability of the homes, while still following to the principles of Community First! Village, a sustainable housing model focused on fostering social connection and environmental responsibility.
The duplex units incorporate features such as operable skylights, integrated storage, and flexible room dividers, ensuring that each home remains adaptable to the unique needs of its residents, all while maintaining a focus on sustainability and affordability.
